Most top level CrossFit athletes have a great sense of humility. CrossFit workouts demand a certain respect and will humble most. The photo above illustrates our point. These young men all posses great athletic talent and remain humble.  Although this photo does not show Tyler in ideal position, (as can happen during Grace - two hands anyhow) he maintained solid technique throughout, and PR'd with a time of 2:38.

One of the most important things we can do to improve ourselves is to continue our education.  The CrossFit community is filled with talented and intelligent coaches.  We have had the privelege of having some these great coaches come to our box. (Coach B and KStar).  

Coming up on August 30th, Dutch Lowy will be at Catalyst Athletics for his one day training seminar.  His seminar takes a detailed look at how and why we program.  CrossFit is not a randomly generated program with no planning.  Good programming is an art.  It takes experience, experimentation and creativity.  Dutch brings together different ideas and aspects of training to make the programing a little less of a mystery.

Technique and Speed are two separate but equal entities when it comes to getting better times in workout. Clean movement is more efficient and takes less energy. All too often with body weight exercises we see a decrease in quality when we increase the speed. That is a mistake. What we are looking for both fast and beautiful.

Lifting heavy weights can be frightening to the beginner. Confidence grows with experience. Confidence means believing that it can be done with a firm understanding of what it takes to get it done. Experience and confidence turn fear into respect. Veteran lifters always maintain a healthy respect for heavy weights. Slow and gradual loading over time will build confidence and enable future success.

The Future of CrossFit

For the month of August we have been running free kids classes every Saturday at 11am in preparation for our CrossFit Kids program. Kristy and Dave have done a wonderful job of teaching kids the mechanics of fitness. And from a kids perspective - most importantly - they are making CrossFit fun. As our community grows, it is nice to see so many future firebreathers in the gym.

In a previous post it was mentioned that we may have a local affiliate competition.  Annie Sakamoto of CrossFit Santa Cruz Central is taking the initiative to host the first competition on September 12th and 13th.  The details are forthcoming, however we do know that there will be categories for competitors from Novice to Elite and 50 and over.  Teams will be formed like the CrossFIt Games, teams of 4-6 must have at least 2 women.
