Outside

DSC09310 Katy and Courtnay working their handstand pushups

When in a handstand your hands should be shoulder width and your head slightly tilted towards the ground. Most of us put our hands to wide and either crane our neck to much or look too straight ahead.

We are creatures of habit, most of us lift weights in the same spot each day, use the same pull up bar every time and the list goes on. Make a point to go to a different place this week and take note of your reaction to it.

Opportunity

Christa and Matt have been with our community a long time. They are dedicated, knowledgeable, hard working, and skilled athletes. We are both happy and sad that they will be moving to Idaho for a wonderful opportunity. We wish them luck and and a speedy return. If you want a chance to say good bye hit up an evening class over the next week or two. They will be missed.

Get Over It

Trying new activities is not always easy. And often trying new things in front of others is frightening.  Two great reasons to try new activities.

Last Friday legendary CrossFit athlete Greg Amundson gave a talk at CrossFit West Santa Cruz on Goal setting and the mental side of CrossFit.  It was an informative and entertaining presentation.  The big take away was simple.  Setting goals and keeping a positive outlook are as important as any aspect of your fitness.

What are your goals?

Support

DSC09120 Dave going for 275.

When lifting heavy weight it is good to use some form of assistance.  Often this looks like Jonji spotting Dave during the bench press.   Its good to have friends.  Athletes will also need emotional and psychological assistance.  Encouraging words appropriately used can sometimes be the difference between feeling successful in a workout or not.  Try this experiment tomorrow.  Tell one person in your class one positive thing.  For example:

"I believe you will do well in this workout" or "You look like you are getting better at ______"

Post experience to comments.

Workout: "Chelsea"

Set up before a clock, and every minute on the minute perform 5 pull-ups, 10 push-ups, and 15 squats. Can you continue for thirty minutes? Twenty minutes? How about 10? Post results to comments. If you fall behind the clock keep going for thirty minutes and see how many rounds you can complete.

If you've finished the workout before this time add +1 to each exercise, i.e., 6 pull-ups, 11 push-ups, and 16 squats each minute, and see if you can go the full thirty minutes.

The Next Frontier

DSC09097 Ernie Reyes Sr. and Tony Blauer.

After spending only one day with Tony Blauer it has become clear that we are about to embark on a new frontier.  Fighting is as essential to our fitness and growth as athletes and as elemental as picking up heavy weight or learning the kipping pull-up.  Tony's insight into fear management and the psychology of fighting is impressive.  Participants is yesterdays one day seminar learned simple drills and skills that will immediately transfer to everyday life.
