Strategy

Midline stabilization is paramount to all other things. It makes no sense to progress to complicated movements and fast speeds without a stable spine. The coaches use different cues to get the same idea across. Big Breath and Hold. Belly Tight. Get Tall. The words we use are not important, what is important is that athletes learn how to use the muscles of the abdomen to stabilize the spine and allow the big muscles of the hip to generate the real power.

Simple in concept, yet not so simple in application. We find that even some of our best athletes have managed to make it pretty far with less than ideal stabilization strategies. In the photo it seems as though Cara is totally straight.  A closer look at her low back and you can see that Cara is not completely integrated and her stabilization strategy is other than ideal.
